Who started the lie that the African American community is a matriarchy? Do people not realize how much we are taught to lower ourselves to uplift Black men? How often we are conditioned to bite our tongues so to not disrespect Black men or to ‘put them down’? How often Black girls and women are expected to be silent about their abuse so a Black man doesn’t get into “the system”?

“Who started the lie”

Black men.

Actually we learned about this and talked about it in our black women studies courses, the myth of the black matriarch was a white supremacist tool to turn black men from looking at white people as the ones bringing them down to then turn their attention to black women as the reason they have no power, black men ran with it and now they still running with it

It’s part of the making of a slave. Slave masters murdering the men when they tried to protect their families. In turn Black women sought to protect their sons by teaching them to be more mild. When slaves rose up, men lost their lives but women were less likely to be killed. And if the men were slaughtered then only the women were left. It’s not a great leap to see how many women were left to head households.
The absence of these facts like these leave Black people of today blaming each other for more than they really should along with dozens of other complications that come from being Black and American.

When  slaves rose up, men lost their lives but women were less likely to be killed. And if the men were slaughtered then only the women were left.

Can you provide information for specifically this part? Because I find this hard to believe…

You mean like statistics? Or are you saying you find it hard to believe that makes slaves were more likely to be killed? What part are you having difficulty with?

Where you said female slaves were less likely to be killed. I’m looking for it and I can’t find anything on it. Where in black history is this presented as a “fact”?

why do people promote this myth that Black women have historically had it easier than Black men. as if white people have a soft spot for us or something like unless they have some irrefutable documented evidence i call bs

I don’t know, but it’s really hurtful and insulting to our black female ancestors.

Anthropologist here, black women of any era in the US were considered easy targets for violence by white men, black men and white women. Where as black men were seen as threats and more likely and capable of fighting back. Black women suffered constant violence from basically everyone and hardly anyone addresses it, preferring to focus on the lynching of black men. Women were also lynched but more often raped, battered and murdered in more private settings without anyone raising an eyebrow.

lets remember that the pulse nightclub shooting was an act of homophobic violence. it was a hate crime. the media is trying to downplay the fact that it was a gay bar, but it was one of the most well-known in orlando and if a shooter wanted to specifically target LGBT people, this is where he would have gone.

the shooter could have gone to any other club. he chose pulse for a reason. please keep the victims of this horrendous shooting in your thoughts.

this.
